Is the 2021 Ford Explorer ST a performance SUV you should buy?

Joylandi 19-May, 2021
The Explorer is one of Ford's best selling vehicles. For the latest generation of this popular SUV Ford decided to add the ST badge. So, under the hood there is a 3.0L EcoBoost V6 that pumps out 400HP \u0026 is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Getting the power to the ground is a tweaked AWD system. On the outside you will find an ST specific grills, wheels and rear bumper. On the inside you will find special leather seats, new tech, and three row capability. Is the 2021 Ford Explorer ST a performance SUV you should buy?

  • It looks like American cars are still behind the Japanese competition

  • Real wheel drive sucks if you live in a place where it snows!

  • Overpriced POS. Guy does hand gestures like he should be selling shit on QVC.

  • Right , this the same car for less money compared to the Rang Rovers any more

  • 400hp is absolutely enough power. Anything outside of that is most definitely not a need.

    • Oh yeah for sure, noobs on youtube are horsepower obsessed when you don't need that much in the real world with 65mph speed limits

  • I brought one home today and will need to play around tomorrow. Ignorant me did not know until just now that it had 400 HP and a 5 second 0-60 time, which is pretty nuts. WTF did I just buy? ST street pack with big brakes, premium tech package and a sh*t load of cool stuff. Without joking at all, I literally had no idea this was the "high performance" Explorer as I just liked the looks and the 3 row seating, so I haven't stomped the accelerator yet or driven fast at all. That will change slightly in the morning. Ha!

  • I give this video one zonk for the pistachio crack. I think these things look great. But they are too powerful for my size 3 foot.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!

  • this thing would be able to catch up with a Type R or even a WRX.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!

  • Excellent review Joe! This Suv has now moved to Top of my possible Suvs to purchase as a busy 9-5 baseball Mom. I secretly love sport performance on SUVS. But that aside,I think price is a bit high in comparison to Telluride or others in its class. Unless! the good high end quality parts in this SUV are reason for 57k😳. I also need to test drive it and see how I like the ride. Definitely got to put on my high end thick tread tires i always use that really add to comfort of my SUVS. but I love you accessed it first. As you a prior formula 1 driver, if im correct. I totally trust your thoughts and take on each vehicle you vett. I like the zonk on no plug in for tech in third row. Come on Ford! Aside from that this ST is looking like a beauty. Performance and all. AWESOME video. Keep em' coming! 😁

  • Got mine 3 weeks ago and already have 3.5k miles on it! Vertical info system that waste space is by far the worst thing about it - hope they''ll fix it with a software update. This thing is fast and fun to drive, best-driving experiences among 3 row SUVs (apart from top luxury class).

    • @mike carpio i took it offtoading 5 times already in Utah. My kids slept most of if in their carseats. I feel comfortable

    • how is it with taking bumps

  • Driving down the road in my new explorer ST with hoagie sandwiches in each door panel.

  • It looks like I-pad the infotainment system but it's ok 👊👌👍

  • The tailpipes suck really bad ,seriously 😒, Ford took extra steps to be lame on that one 💯

  • My husband would buy it for me. But he did not like the weird iPad sitting Lol. Ford needs to do it like the Ram trucks, they have it built in. Then we will look into getting one 😁

  • This is the exact car/color I have, but I’m just dying at the food references 😂

  • I don’t like the vertical shit.

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT kills this, in every way

  • The screen has got to go

  • Zonk

  • Hi. Where is the spare tire?

  • local Ford Dealer Service writers tell you to stay away from new Explorer. Too many issues

  • This thing is a full 2xturbo ROCKET. Sexy grocery getter and I Love it for Me & Mommy on Saturday night.. Went for the upgrade 21's and big red calipers - lovin' this Car. drawback? Painted black wheels ....eh??

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.

  • I enjoy your humor along with the review.

  • Should be max $45k or so. That backup camera, poor fitting on interior, cheap tires, etc.

  • I just got one three weeks ago, with the Street Pack, Tech Package and Twin Panel Moonroof. Love it so far.

  • Hey 👋 another great video on the new FORD EXPLORER. I had an EXPLORER actually 2 back in the early 2K's and they were good back then. Thank you for bringing this to us great job as always 👏

    • @Raiti's Rides Hey 👋 you are welcome and thanks for the reply, have a good day.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.

  • Is it just me or the seats looks poorly stitched?

  • This has to be one of your best reviews....lots of great Zingers!...get it, Zingers....i crack myself up.

  • Walker ford sucks. Took our fusion there for some issues and they werent anywhere close on the diagnosis. Charged me for a bunch of stuff they said would fix my car and they werent anywhere close to the ballpark when we did get it fixed.

    • Fixed at another dealership, that is.

  • WHY IS IT ALWAYS SUNNY IN CLEARWATER FLORIDA!!

  • Joe, once again, another fantastic review. You have an amazing knack for keeping the viewer interested. Even at a long red light, with stopped traffic, you have the oritory skills to talk through a tricky situation, like that; and, still keep everyone interested. Very impressive 👍👍

  • The best reviews!

  • I agree with the Zonk on the outrageous infotainment system. Also the backup camera is a joke for such a huge screen. 400 hp is enough for this beast. The fuel mileage is impressive for all that power. I’m still skeptical about turbos on small displacement engines. Historically they aren’t reliable and if I’m going to drop 57k on a vehicle it better last a long long time. Time will tell and I wouldn’t recommend anyone buying the first year of a new generation vehicle. Wait a few years.

  • A true cops car. Thanks cops for ruining the explorer for me. Sucks

  • Informative, but more importantly, hilarious.

    • Thanks for letting bring the laughs and this SUV to you!

  • Only Ford could make $60K+ look ultra low rent.

  • Good review

  • Hello Jim..! 🤣

  • Quad exhaust tips are non-functional - just for looks

  • I love the way these look. I pre the st street pack with the black wheels, ect. But I do think they are over priced.

  • Would love to take it for a drive I had a 94 and 05 and love the way ran but unfortunately my 05 got stolen and I hadn't tried to get another until I need a f150 but sents I my credit score was 0 they stuck me with a 2011 Kia Sorento fwd instead I ratherd it been a explorer or f150 AWD or 4x4 because the road I live fwd during winter is no good at least for the 2011 Kia Sorento I got stuck on a hill several times with the roads being bad

  • Digging the steering wheel

  • I love the fact that you know what you're talking about when it comes to "on throttle" stats and performance! REFRESHING! That said, I just traded in my 2020 ST because to me, it just isn't worth the high price tag 60k with this lackluster interior. Step it UP Ford, put Sync 4 in the Explorer and fix that super small back up screen PLEASE! People who own this vehicle are having major problems with the interior ( especially the seats) ripping and deteriorating. Once again, Ford- step it up. Driving this ST is super fun and with a price drop or an upgrade in the interior should fix things, IMO. The good news? I got a great trade in price for my ST so all is good.

    • What did you get for a trade-in?

    • Thanks for sharing that perspective from your experience!

  • Seats 💺 look awesome 👌 😎

  • Quad exhaust really sets off the back!!!

  • Hey Joe 👋 👋

  • First thing i would do is have the front Ford badge sprayed flat black or gloss black vinyl and de-badge the "Explorer" off the hood. And it looks like they just put a large iPad in the middle for the info-tainment screen!

  • The infotainment system is ugly to me , I don't like it at all!

  • Too bad my st gave me issues to where ford corporate is gunna lemon law buy back mine. For sure is a fun suv to drive.

  • Ford Explorer 2021 purchased on last week of January 2021 week 1. engine block heater leak(car stopped on highway twice in freezing cold) week 2. door and window make noises week 3. window air leak. roof rail loose week 5. transmission gone total mileage to date only 6600km vehicle @ dealership for more than 4 weeks for repairs. I have asked Ford to replace it as there is obviously something very wrong with the car and it is not safe to drive around. But there response there is no lemon law in Canada and they can only repair it. I said enough is enough, in two months car has been at dealership for more than 5 weeks. It is impacting immensely my family, Health and work. So I made some signs and sat infront of dealership as of protest but instead of offering help They called police on me and my 4 years old, 8 years old and 11 years old kid. When investigated officer response was to Ford manager “I would be doing the same if you had sold me the lemon/ defective new car and I can’t interfare it is a civil matter” Please help me as I am very helpless. I never expected customer services/rights could go this low in Canada. Thankyou. I have made complaints to Ford Canada. Here is car information Vehicle Year: 2021 Vehicle: Model Ford Current Mileage: 6300 Dealership : Eastcourt ford Scarborough ONTARIO

  • The brand new Pathfinder is so much nicer!

  • ford E X P L O D E R

  • $57-60K IS HIGH FOR THIS VEHICLE.

  • Love your reviews but you never give a bad review which is an issue. I assume it’s because you are at the mercy of the dealer your shooting your videos at. They aren’t going to allow you to do it if you cast negative light on one of their cars.

  • Reliability is questionable..performance is good..looks decent..maybe $5k to $7k overpriced..nice video JOE and Lori

  • Wonderful review as always -very enjoyable. I like how it goes at a good pace

  • Just ordered a '21 Explorer ST black on black! Can't wait. These drive smooth & incredible w/ outstanding power. Best sport SUV!

    • That will intimidate your mother in law when you go to pick her up

  • You gotta find a tuned one of these to drive! On a simple E85 conversion they run 11’s. With an intercooler and exhaust on top of that, they get insanely fast. I want one soon as my Ford Edge Sport is paid off!

  • 57k ....OUCH

  • Hey Joe! Do you think you could do vids of you sitting down and having a one on one type of vid and goober your viewers prices to help your other viewers get a base.one of sorts? Maybe have some of your connections in the area give you pre negotiated pricing? You make a dime, they ,are a dime and your viewers get a better deal. Win/win.

  • I totally agree. This large screen along with the big gaps are the worst thing on this. This screen has much larger bezzle and the display area is actually narrower than the smaller screen.

    • @Gary S nobody anticipated Koreans are bringing some luxury features down to the regular brands I guess. Similar things happened when they first dealt with Tesla.

    • @CiTY_HuNTeR The Pilot is sort of a middling vehicle, guess targets move all the time.

    • @Gary S well, my aunt is a member of the design team of this explorer. She said when the Koreans bring out Telluride and Palisade, their whole project groups were blamed by their boss. But they were told to benchmark Pilot when they were designing this car, no such thing as Telluride back then. 😆

    • IMO the screen looks good, but as Joe pointed, it is so stupid that the camera image cannot be enlarged and is actually showing a smaller image than the 8" for the cameras, my sister has Platinum and the fake wood looks bad.

  • This (mediocrity) is the reason the competition like the KIA Telluride is killing this in terms of hype and popularity. Ford needs to abandon the "good enough, do you think they will notice we skimped on the quality and wow factor" level stuff and get back to surprising us with new features, innovation and nice materials.

  • In Florida we air condition steering wheels lol. My palms always sweat and makes my wheel slippery

  • No Joe, they say shooting the exhaust down keeps the exhaust tips clean. I get the logic. Just wish more people would hand wash and detail their cars.

  • 146 MPH wow!

  • Typical Ford QC....SMH....

  • american car is not reliable

  • 11:37 It doesn't even have a simple fan speed control button.

  • Good work on this one Joe!

    • Thanks for saying that and letting me share it with you Trev!

  • Yikes, $57k... totally crazy. Shitty interior design and poor fit and finish. Exterior styling looks nice tho

  • I love my 2020 Silver don't hardly drive it only has 2000 miles I have some health issues but getting better

  • ST best Explorer got one myself 🔥🚀

  • I got my st new for 52, I love it.. Gets great gas mileage, drives itself on the highway, massaging seats, tons of space.. plus once you tune these they’re pretty insane.

  • I own a 2015 explorer, just can't get on board with the new redesign, in my opinion it's one of the ugliest suv's inside and out. I think the 19 explorer sport looks the best

  • There's a lot I like about it the new explorer. Increased wheelbase, a bit more horsepower, true panoramic roof but overall I still prefer the last gen sport model. I think I'm the only one and I might be a bit bias as Sport owner. The red stitching was much nicer, I prefer the non-tablet infotainment, I really like having a shifter and not a dial... Etc. I'm not saying the ST is bad I think it's still great and I know 2 people who picked up 2020's. I just think I'll wait to see if they do a raptor variant of the Bronco. I don't think the price is that good and IMO it's not enough of an upgrade. Now if they threw in the second gen 3.5 producing 450HP I'd drop mine in a second even if I don't love some things about it.

  • I hear a rumor that this engine may find its way into the ranger raptor.

  • If only this had the F150 interior.

  • I want this just so I can look like a cop on the road and troll people!

  • i really reccomend anker battery packs for the 3rd row people, i own 5 myself

  • when u said 0-60 5 seconds i was like huh the new f-150 lightning does 0-60 in 4.5 i did lol for real about the pistachio nuts comment and my neighbors wife got rid of the ford edge for the new explorer st just a few months ago.

  • I'm just not diggin the interior

  • You are the BEST, Raitis! On throttle!!! Always the bare bones, bottom truth description! I'm part of Raitis' family. Yes sir!

  • Easy to find 5k under sticker making it a bargain compared to other luxury vehicles in this level of performance. Plus 5-Star tunes them making them animals.

  • The 2k/4k screen resolution options are much appreciated thanks!

  • Fun Fact: What is the best-selling SUV in history? The Ford Explorer at the Chicago Auto Show. Ford sold its 8 millionth Explorer last month, making it the best-selling SUV of all time. Ford sold its 8 millionth Explorer last month, securing its place as the best-selling sport utility vehicle of all time. Ford just kills all the others in many segments. Best selling truck, Best selling sports car, and soon I'm sure their new vehicles will be top sellers too: the Mach e, The Maverick, the Bronco. They are definitely killing it. When will your favorite brands outsell them in the main segments?

  • That infotainment is hideous

  • The st is a beast and we'll worth the price and the amount of performance you get. Though price wise it's not the same as a durango srt I would say that's the competitor both cars have great 0-60 times and quarters and make good power but only one makes a ton of more power stock from a tune obviously the st has forced induction and the durango is NA. The st on 93 pump gas tune can get you low 4s to mid 4s 0-60 and if you decide to go for the best tuner in my opinion which is ZFG get yourself the e50 and you can hit high 3s and break high 11s in the quarter. Yes my opinion is biased I have owned 2 already.🤣🤣🤣

    • Thanks for sharing that great input on this one.

  • I own a 94 Ford explorer sport i love it! With a 5 speed too bad the dont make em manual no more

  • Are you going to cover any of the 2021 edge models? I’m waiting for that one ☺️

  • "For your pistachios so you can't scratch your nuts" 🤣🤣🤣

    • Thanks for letting me share the laughs and the cars with you!

  • Ford isn’t a brand I’ll buy

    • @Raiti's Rides learned that mistakes with a 2nd year ecoboost that spent more time in the shop then in my driveway

    • Cool!

  • Really enjoy your channel - I am new - started watching the past 30 days or so...... I would be very reluctant to spend $55K+ on a Ford product that is missing the details you pointed out and “Zonked” in the review ... there are much better choices as you approach $60K for an SUV in this category. Thanks for your opinions.

    • Thanks Steve for taking the time to watch and comment! I appreciate your support. Great points you bring up!

  • I choose my Blazer RS

  • Purchased a used 2020 Platinum over the ST in March, with 25K on the clock. It does have some valid "zonks" as Joe put's it, but overall it fits our needs. Just made a round trip drive from New England to FLA, and the comfort and power was a plus! Would never buy these new though. In fact my last new vehicle purchase is still in my driveway; 2005 4X4 F150 Lariat.

    • I really appreciate you sharing this from your experience!

  • Joe great review. This explorer not worth the $$$

  • It’s never good when you compare a car to a police car!

  • I really wish companies would stop using gloss black plastic.

  • So do we call that a power toe?....

  • Have exact same Explorer...love it still after a year... except nasty little electronics gremlins that show up occasionally (driver seat settings never save, iPad screen locks, side mirrors sometimes don't reset) but on the street.... ROCKS... but should be $50k MAX! GREAT review!

  • Here I am oversees in Georgia, country not the state😄 watching Joe what he does best. Great car and the review 🤟
